Duties and taxes on goods coming into Kenya are worked out from the CIF value: the value of the goods plus freight plus insurance.
- Import duty: a percentage set by the goods’ HS code under the East African Community tariff.
- VAT: 16%, charged on the CIF value plus import duty.
- Import Declaration Fee (IDF): 2.5% of the CIF value.
- Railway Development Levy (RDL, also called KRDL): 2% of the CIF value.
- Inspection and other fees that apply to some goods, such as KEBS, port health and the Anti-Counterfeit Authority levy.
- Excise duty on certain goods such as alcohol, tobacco, cosmetics and vehicles.
- Handling and clearance charges for your shipment.
The duty calculator in the customer portal adds these up for your HS code and value. Its result is an estimate: the final amount is assessed by customs.
